Specifying box culverts without a phone call

Span, rise, cover depth and load class settle most of a culvert specification. Here is the order to decide them in, and what each one constrains.

A box culvert specification is usually written backwards. The drawing arrives with a span and a rise already on it, and everything else — wall thickness, reinforcement, joint type — gets negotiated afterwards with whichever plant picks up the phone.

Decide cover depth first. It sets the earth load, and earth load sets the wall and slab thickness far more than the span does. A 2400 × 1800 unit under 0.9 m of fill is a different element from the same opening under 6 m, even though the drawing looks identical.

Then fix the load class. HS-25 and LM1 are not interchangeable, and a unit designed for one is not automatically acceptable under the other. Where a DOT reference applies, name it — it usually carries detailing rules the base standard does not.

Only then choose the joint. Male/female with a sealant handles most gravity applications; a rubber-ring joint is worth the cost where infiltration matters or where the culvert runs below the water table.
